Hotel Elefant is a contemporary music ensemble dedicated to the works of innovative, living composers.

Formed in 2011 by composers Leaha Maria Villarreal and Mary Kouyoumdjian, Hotel Elefant ambitiously presents new music through commissions, performances, and moderated discussions between composers, performers, and audiences. Committed to modern sounds and sonic explorations, this vibrant ensemble brings a keen awareness of today’s music to the general public and highlights those living composers who are blurring lines, pushing boundaries, and fostering creativity.

With a flexible roster of more than twenty musicians, Hotel Elefant has worked closely with such progressive composers as Michael Gordon, David T. Little, Michelle Lou, Angélica Negrón, and Chinary Ung. Future collaborations include partnerships with Experiments in Opera, IKTUS percussion, and Opera on Tap. The ensemble’s debut sparked the interest of Alex Ross’ The Rest is Noise, radio station Q2 Music, and The New Yorker. Of their inaugural season, the online publication I Care if You Listen raved: “Hotel Elefant seems to be carving out their own niche, combining style, versatility, and quality of performance. They are well on their way to becoming a resounding force in the new music world.”

The ashcan “Orchestra” is simultaneously the work of composer Pat Spadine, a large collection of toy and real instruments, and a revolving performance ensemble based in Brooklyn, NY.

What Where is a piano/percussion duo consisting of Julia Den Boer and Piero Guimaraes. They will perform Edges by Franck Bedrossian.

Iktus+ will perform John Cage's quartet for piano, percussion and radio Credo in US.

Friday, March 1, 8pm: Firehouse Series #2 feat. Concert Black, Mariel Roberts, Duo Orfeo & Radical 2

Iktus Percussion continues The Firehouse New Music Series with four of New York's most burning new music ensembles including Concert Black, Mariel Roberts, Duo Orfeo, and Radical 2.

Friday, March 1st, 8pm
The Firehouse Space, 246 Frost St, Brooklyn (click here for a map)
$10 admission

Concert Black formed in Brooklyn in 2011 after bonding over the music of George Crumb and Riskay at the ever unconventional Bang on a Can organization's summer institute. While all the members boast acute classical over-training, Domenica Fossati (flute) is steeped in the NYC Afrobeat scene, Lisa Dowling (bass) is also DJ Lil Miss Dolemite, and Owen weaver (drums) fronts as an electro-acoustic percussion artist and former thrasher. Together, they draw upon their diverse musical backgrounds for their song writing, improvisation, and commissioning of today's emerging composers.

“Trailblazing” cellist Mariel Roberts (Feast of Sounds) is quickly gaining recognition as a deeply dedicated interpreter and performer of contemporary music. Recent performances have garnered praise for her “technical flair and exquisite sensitivity” (American Composers Forum), as well as her ability to “couple youthful vision with startling maturity”. (InDigest Magazine). She holds degrees from both the Eastman School and the Manhattan School of Music, where she specialized in contemporary performance practice while studying with Alan Harris and Fred Sherry. Mariel performs internationally as a member of the Mivos String Quartet, and has performed with a variety of other ensembles in venues around the world as an advocate of living composers.

Duo Orfeo draws their repertoire largely from hidden and under-explored byways of western musical tradition both past and present—ranging from Renaissance lute and French Baroque harpsichord music to compositions by such modern masters as Arvo Pärt, Federico Mompou and Valentin Silvestrov—an ever-expanding body of music that includes many of their own arrangements of works written for other instruments as well as works written for the ensemble of guitar duo. They play this unique repertoire on classical guitars with an approach inspired by the tradition of Andres Segovia (which they learned from Phillip de Fremery, a guitarist and teacher who studied with Segovia and a true curator of his legacy) and also on vintage electric guitars through tube amplifiers, creating a new sound that is all their own by playing these instruments (normally associated with styles outside of classical music) with the finesse, clarity and focused touch of classical musicians.

Jamie Balmer, guitar
Joseph Ricker, guitar

Levy Lorenzo and Dennis Sullivan (Radical 2) are an irrational, classification-defying duo that explores the intersection of theatric, percussive and electronic mediums. March 1 will feature compositions by Rick Burkhardt, Alexander Schubert, and custom electronics designed by Radical 2.

Lesley Flanigan is an experimental electronic musician living in New York City. Inspired by the physicality of sound, she builds her own instruments using minimal electronics, microphones and speakers. Performing these instruments alongside traditional instrumentation that often includes her own voice, she creates a kind of physical electronic music that embraces both the transparency and residue of process — sculpting sound from a pallet of noise and subtle imperfections. Her work has been presented at venues and festivals internationally, including Sonar (Barcelona), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), ISSUE Project Room (Brooklyn), The Stone (New York), TransitioMX (Mexico City), CMKY Festival (Boulder), the Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art (Denmark) and .HBC in Berlin.
